Adjectives are the words we use for describing a noun or pronoun. They play a very important role in written as well as spoken English. We can use them in following two ways –
Attributive use, i.e., when the adjective is used before the noun it describes. For example in the phrase "an intelligent student", intelligent is attribute.
Predicative use, i.e., when the adjective is used after auxiliary verb (verb "to be" i.e., is/are/am/was/were). For example; Ram is intelligent.
So, adjectives can be used "before a noun" and also "after a noun/pronoun". Most adjectives can be used in both the ways, but some adjectives can be used attributively only or some predicatively only. For example, the adjectives like — afraid, alive, asleep, aware, etc. are normally used predicatively only.
It is very clear now that attributive use of adjectives results in "Adjective + Noun" combination.
